How your ice maker works
Every batch of ice runs through the same four-stage loop. Knowing which stage stalls tells a technician where to look first.
- Stage 1
Water valve opens
The control signals the inlet valve to let water flow for a few seconds.
Where it fails: Closed supply, low pressure, clogged filter or a failed inlet valve.
- Stage 2
Tray fills
Water travels up the fill tube into the ice mold.
Where it fails: A frozen fill tube, or a misaligned tube that drips and leaks.
- Stage 3
Water freezes
Cold freezer air turns the water into cubes over a cycle.
Where it fails: A freezer running warm, or poor airflow around the ice maker.
- Stage 4
Ice is released
The mold warms slightly and ejects cubes into the bin.
Where it fails: A stuck module or harvest motor; jammed ice in the bin or auger.
Problems and their usual causes
Likely causes, listed roughly from most to least common in our experience. Your technician confirms the actual fault before quoting a repair.
No ice
- Water inlet valve not opening
- Frozen fill tube
- Clogged water filter
- Low household water pressure
Small or hollow cubes
- Restricted water filter
- Low or uneven water pressure
Leaking
- Misaligned or cracked fill tube
- Inlet valve not closing fully
Dispenser not working
- Auger motor
- Dispenser door flap or switch
Water filters and ice quality
Your ice maker gets a timed dose of water each cycle. When a filter clogs, less water gets through in that window, so the mold only partly fills. The result is small, thin or hollow cubes, and the dispenser often slows down too.
An overdue filter can also let ice pick up an off taste. It is not the only cause: odors from the freezer and old ice in the bin can do the same.
Rule of thumb: replace the filter about every 6 months, or as your manufacturer recommends. If cubes stay small after a fresh filter, low water pressure or the inlet valve is the next suspect.

The water dispenser works but there is no ice. What does that tell you?
It suggests water is reaching the fridge, so the problem is more likely at the ice maker itself: a frozen fill tube, the ice maker module, the arm or switch, or one side of a dual inlet valve. A freezer that is running too warm can also stop ice production.
How often should I change my refrigerator water filter?
Many manufacturers recommend about every 6 months, but follow the schedule in your owner's manual. Replace it sooner if water flow slows or cubes start coming out small.
My ice tastes or smells bad. Is it the filter?
An old filter is one common cause, but not the only one. Ice absorbs odors from uncovered food in the freezer, and stale ice that sits in the bin for weeks can taste off. Try a new filter, toss the old ice, and clean the bin. If the taste persists, mention it when you call.
How soon after a repair will I have ice again?
A refrigerator ice maker often needs several hours to cool down and produce its first batches, and filling the bin can take a day or more. Standalone machines vary by model. Your technician will confirm the fill and harvest cycle before leaving.
