Food safety while you wait

Guidance below comes from the USDA. It is general advice, not a guarantee, and it does not replace your own judgment with a thermometer.

How long a closed freezer holds

Full freezerabout 48 hours
Half-full freezerabout 24 hours

Important: these USDA figures apply to a freezer that was already frozen solid and kept closed during a power outage. When a freezer fails on its own, you often do not know when it started warming, so these times are not guaranteed. Check the food itself.

  • Keep the door shut

Every opening lets cold air out. Open it once to check temperatures and gather items, then close it.

  • Move what matters most

Shift still-safe meat, poultry, seafood and prepared foods to a cooler with enough ice to keep them at 40°F or below, or to a working freezer. Check with a thermometer; cooling food again does not make unsafe food safe.

  • Refreeze or keep

Frozen food that still has ice crystals, or is at 40°F or below, can generally be refrozen. Quality may drop.

  • When to throw it out

Discard perishable food that has been above 40°F for more than 2 hours. Never taste food to check it. Some items have exceptions, so use the USDA chart.

Symptom → likely cause → typical fix

These are the patterns we see most often. They are estimates to help you describe the problem, not a diagnosis; your technician tests before recommending any repair.

SymptomLikely causeTypical fix
Not freezingSoft ice cream, food above 0°F
  • Evaporator fan not running
  • Defrost system failure icing over the coil
  • Sealed system problem (compressor, leak or restriction)
Test the fan and defrost circuit first; replace the failed part. Sealed-system work is diagnosed separately and quoted before any decision.
Frost buildupWhite coat on the rear wall or vents
  • Defrost heater burned out
  • Defrost thermostat failed
  • Torn or flattened door gasket
Continuity-test the heater and thermostat, inspect the gasket, then replace the part that failed and clear the coil.
Loud noiseSqueal, chirp, grinding or rattle
  • Evaporator fan motor worn or striking ice
  • Condenser fan motor worn or clogged with dust
Locate the noise source, clean the condenser area, and replace the worn fan motor if needed.
Water under the freezerPuddle, or ice sheet on the floor
  • Clogged or frozen defrost drain
Clear and flush the drain, check the drain heater or strap if fitted, and confirm the drain pan is intact.

Upright, chest, built-in and freezer drawers

The cold comes from the same basic cycle, but each design fails, and gets repaired, a little differently.

Upright
Most garage uprights are frost-free, so they carry the same fan and defrost parts as a kitchen fridge. Repairs usually happen through the rear panel inside the cabinet.
Chest
Usually manual-defrost with fewer moving parts. Diagnosis focuses on the temperature control, start components, compressor and lid seal; frost here is normal up to a point.
Built-in
Column and integrated freezers sit inside cabinetry. Access, panel removal and ventilation checks take extra care, and some parts may need to be ordered.
Freezer drawers
Bottom-mount and undercounter drawers add slides, tracks and drawer gaskets to the list. A drawer that does not close fully often drives frost and warm spots.

We work on freezers and refrigerator-freezers from GE, Frigidaire, Whirlpool, Samsung, LG and Sub-Zero, among others. See the full list of brands we repair.

Repair or replace?

There is no single price rule, and we will not quote one before seeing your freezer. These questions usually make the decision clear.

Usually worth repairing

  • The freezer is in the first half of its expected life
  • The fault is a fan, defrost part, drain or gasket
  • It is a built-in or high-end unit that would be costly to replace
  • The cabinet, liner and door are in good shape

Worth weighing replacement

  • The unit is near the end of its expected life
  • The quote involves the sealed system on an older, inexpensive model
  • It has needed several repairs recently
  • Rust or a cracked liner is letting moisture in

A practical rule of thumb

Compare the repair quote with the cost of a comparable new freezer, then factor in age. Many homeowners lean toward replacing when a repair approaches half the price of new on an older unit. Your technician will explain the options plainly. Visits start with a service call [PLACEHOLDER: service call fee].

My freezer stopped but the fridge side still feels cool. Is my food safe?

Do not judge by feel. Put an appliance thermometer in the freezer and check items individually. Food that still has ice crystals or is at 40°F or below can generally be refrozen. Perishable food that has been above 40°F for more than 2 hours should be thrown out, and never taste food to decide. The USDA 48-hour and 24-hour figures describe a closed freezer during a power outage, not a freezer that failed at an unknown time.

Why does frost keep coming back after I defrost my freezer?

If a frost-free freezer refrosts within days, the automatic defrost system is usually not doing its job, or warm air is getting in past the door gasket. Manual defrosting only clears the symptom. We avoid recommending DIY shortcuts such as heat guns or bypassing controls, which can crack liners or create electrical hazards.

What does water under my freezer usually mean?

Most often the defrost drain is clogged or frozen, so meltwater from each defrost cycle overflows instead of reaching the drain pan. A cracked pan or an ice maker water line can also leak. A technician can tell them apart quickly.

Do you repair chest freezers in garages?

Yes. Garage chest and upright freezers are a regular call in Charlotte, especially during hot summers when the unit works harder. Mention the brand and roughly how old it is when you call.
